Leisure Great Ways to Pamper Yourself on Teachers’ Day By PreSha Barnes T eachers’ Day is one on which our students, school administration and parents acknowledge and celebrate us for the work that we do. Many of us look forward to this day as students tend to pay tributes, treat us to gifts and in some cases attempt to model our mannerisms by becoming ‘a teacher for a day’. We appreciate the kind sentiments, thoughts and efforts that go into making our day special. As educators, we should also take the opportunity to treat ourselves to something great. Here are a few ideas on how you can pamper yourself on Teachers’ Day. Go to a spa! The job of a teacher has many challenges. There are good days and then there are days that make us question ourselves. A spa date is an excellent way to relax and let go of everyone and everything. Most spas offer itemized lists that include a variety of massages, facials, manicures and pedicures at affordable prices. The best part is that all you may need is an hour of two with someone else taking care of you to feel as good as new. Quiet writing or reading time Every day, we read material relating curriculum and resources. Whenever we write, it is mainly to do lesson plans or a “to do list,” pertaining to chores or term papers (if you’re working on another degree). If you enjoy reading or writing, why not use the time to read a book that you enjoy or write about something you love? Choose a place. This might be your favourite coffee shop, park or even a cozy spot at home. Let your family know that you are ‘booking an hour or two’ for yourself, so you won’t be disturbed. Put your tablet and other technological devices away. Use the time to handwrite a journal entry/poem or to catch up on some reading. Who knows, this could be the start to your novel, book of poetry or the inspiration that you need for the days ahead. Retail therapy Even if you are saving for a rainy day, sometimes a remedy that you need to pamper yourself is some ‘retail therapy’. You might have been eyeing a pair of shoes, a new fragrance or cologne or some other desirable item for a while now. It is O.K. to celebrate your achievements and the hard work that you have been doing over the weeks leading up to Teachers’ Day. You have earned it. Sometimes, we have to reward ourselves for our hard work! No chores Take this time to not do anything. Order take-out or go to your nice restaurant. Invite friends over and play some games or have a movie night. Instead of cleaning, hire someone if only for this one day to clean for you. Leave the chores for later and enjoy yourself. Try something new Your friends have been telling you about this amazing new restaurant, recreational activity or event that you MUST experience. Why not go for it? We spend a lot of our days challenging our students to work smarter and better. We encourage them to think outside the box. Teachers’ Day is an occasion that offers us an opportunity to practice what we teach. Try something new that is safe, enjoyable and fun. Remember, whatever you choose to do, do it for you! It is easy to take care of others. Oftentimes, we forget that we need to also take care of ourselves. We forget to celebrate the work that we do and the valuable contributions that we make to the lives of others each day. This Teachers’ Day, take the time to appreciate and to celebrate you!
