I’m Maren, the artist behind The Tin Owl.
I create a line of wall art, gifts, and home
decor with my photographs. My goal
with The Tin Owl is to create images and
products that enhance your day, that
make you smile, that strike a chord and
inspire you.
“All of my work starts with a photograph. My favorite part about
designing my products is wandering with my camera and taking
photos, and then editing the photos and imagining them on
different products. Some photos are meant to hang on walls,
others work best as a necklace or a greeting card.”
What’s been your most popular item or line to date?
My Vintage Home Collection has been my most popular
line to date. I photograph vintage license plates (the older,
the better) and make images with those photos within
each state’s outline. I create prints, cards, tea towels,
baby rompers, pillows, magnets, and jewelry with my
license plate images.
What is the biggest challenge you face during your
daily schedule?
Staying on task!! I so wish my day was full of nothing but photographing and creating,
but as a small business owner I am also responsible for all those fun things like
bookkeeping and accounting. As a creative person who has a serious aversion to
spreadsheets, it can be challenging to discipline myself to do the everyday business
things instead of putting them aside and focusing on the fun creative work.
What’s the best lesson you have you learned in
running your own business?
The details count more than you realize! I’ve learned that
the effort I put into my packaging and customer service
is just as important as the love I put into my products
themselves.
