Jewelry
Creating jewelry was a hobby I began years ago . I would make pieces upon request or for charitable auctions and fundraisers in my community . I started selling consignment pieces at a local salon and by word of mouth , my business began to grow . Last year , I finally decided to take a leap of faith and jump right in full-time with Metal Roots and I ’ ve never looked back .
“ I enjoy making a variety of pieces that appeal to a wide range of patrons . I ’ m often asked to make custom pieces or refurbish jewelry that holds special meaning to the owner .”
What ’ s the hardest part about running your own business ? There are so many facets to running a business and I ’ m constantly learning how to make it better , which is something I enjoy . Finding a balance between work and motherhood is a challenge , and one that I ’ m sure many moms can relate to . For me , it ’ s pretty tough to put aside work with my own business being based in my home but it ’ s even tougher to say “ No ” to my toddler when she runs to hide and says “ come find me !”, or wants to go outside to play in the sandbox or , “ go on an adventure walk ”. It ’ s important that I make time for her .
What is your favorite part in the process of designing products ? When I sit at my bench and begin to create , I don ’ t always have a specific design in mind and even when I do , it often changes . Seeing plain old wire and sheet metal come to life with heat and a hammer is always intriguing . I love the whole process because it means creating an evolution of something basic and plain into something beautiful and interesting .
What advice would you give to someone considering a similar path ? Never , never , never give up and always believe in yourself , even if no one else does .
