Nancy Anderson Nan Gates Designs Sewn Products Nan Gates Designs handmade handbags and accessories have been sold worldwide at craft events, home shows, online and in small boutiques since 2004. The goal from the very beginning has been to create affordable everyday fabric accessories which are classic in design yet have a contemporary flair. Keen attention to detail and choosing unique and beautiful quality fabrics is key to the final presentation of all my designs. “The best lesson I have learned over the years is to avoid the temptation of trying to be all things to all people ... just stay in my niche and do it well.” What made you start your small business? Having always had a passion for sewing I started out creating tote bags and small purses for myself just for fun. Everywhere I went I would receive compliments and people asking where I got the bag I was wearing. When I told them I made it they would always ask “Do you have a website?” It hit me that I might be on to something so I tested things out at a couple of local home shows where I just about sold out completely both times. Through word of mouth my small business quickly began to grow and now years later I have sold in 49 states as well as many countries worldwide. What is your favorite part of the design process? My absolute favorite part in the design process is shopping for unique and beautiful fabrics that will feature my products in the best way possible. Although I do try to keep up and offer selections with the seasonal color palettes, I tend to not be too trendy otherwise and stick with more classic designs that will stay in style over time yet still have a contemporary edge. I spend a lot of time searching for quality, fun fabrics with great colors and will only buy those that I truly love. If I love them I hope that many others will as well. nangatesdesigns.etsy.com 10 | Vol. 9 | GBK’s Pre-Primetime Emmys Celebrity Gift Lounge
