What does 'Americana' mean to you?
Americana is cozy, Americana is history and present and future. Old Glory and Kentucky bourbon and baseball. Country music and jazz and people of all races. Road trips and diners. Fireworks and the ocean and mountains and the desert and NYC and California and Nashville and all the places in between. Pie and burgers and fries, slushies and Texas-brewed and Michigan-brewed beer. Pickup trucks and horses. So many things!
What do you love about the Americana style?
Everything! Honestly. I love the hardworking earnestness and the laid-back stoner surfer/skateboarder side of it. I love our military, the men and women who are brave enough to fight for this country. I love American flags and all of that Americana iconography! Lana del Rey. Classic rock and East Coast/West Coast/Dirty South hip-hop and hippies and all sides of that stuff. Jimi Hendrix shredding our national anthem. I love it all. I always have and always will. Like, I wanna crank “American Girl” by Tom Petty right now and drive off into the smoky desert sunset in an oldskool gold Camaro. This is who I am, truly! :)
Why do you think we romanticise Americana?
I call myself “very American” because I feel like I am! I romanticise that stuff myself and can only imagine that some people who aren't from America/who don't live in America do too. I think the idea of America is romantic. Starting with the basics of freedom...the desire for freedom...this belief that our dreams can actually come true. The United States of America has always held that dreamy idea of being all we can be, believing in yourself, rising above and all of that. There's a lot of dark history/stories here that prove otherwise for many people/cultures, but I believe that the hope is always there. The light.
What do you like to write about?
I like to write about women and men and relationships and teenage love and kitchen conversations and front porch conversations and music and the country and Jesus and fighting and loving and drinking and smoking and America and wildness and light.
