in creation of
training course
(SUBMITTED PHOTO)
St. Louis Park Sgt. Paul Barnes answers questions as a video crew records a segment for the True
North Constitutional Policing training course.
The St. Louis Park Po-
lice Department is one
of 14 Minnesota law
enforcement
agencies
featured in True North
Constitutional Policing,
an online training course
that meets recent state
mandates and is available
at no charge for Minne-
sota law enforcement of-
fi cers.
The course covers top-
ics such as “the nobility
of law enforcement, the
historical and consti-
tutional signifi cance of
protecting people’s free-
doms, and best practices
for creating a culture
of community respect,”
according to the orga-
nization. The scenario-
based, interactive course
features actual stories
from local offi cers and
community members.
The name references
the belief that offi cers in
the state should uphold
the Constitution as their
“true north” compass
point for guiding actions
and decisions.
“While most law en-
forcement
training
courses focus on the
tactical implementation
of the job, True North
focuses on the ‘why’ of
policing,” said Lora Set-
ter, executive director.
“The 14 participating
agencies helped us create
a modern, customized
and memorable training
course.”
St. Louis Park Police
Chief Mike Harcey said,
“True North Constitu-
tional Policing is pav-
ing a new way for law
enforcement training in
Minnesota, and I am im-
pressed by the planning
and development efforts
that helped make this
happen. This is a timely,
relevant and meaningful
online training experi-
ence, and the St. Louis
Park Police Department
is proud to have been a
partner in these efforts.”
The Minnesota Peace
Offi cer Standards and
Training Board for fi ve
credit hours of manda-
tory training. Only Min-
nesota offi cers who have
a valid number from the
board can view the train-
ing, but more general in-
formation is available at
truenorthpolicing.com.
