Chaska to end the regular
season with a 17-9 record. St. Louis Park and Be-
nilde-St. Margaret’s will
be represented at the Class
AA and A state swimming
and diving meets, which
began Thursday at the
Jean K. Freeman Aquatic
Center at the University of
Minnesota and continues
through Saturday. Diving
prelims are Thursday fol-
lowed by swimming pre-
lims Friday and fi nals for
both on Saturday. Class A
begins each day at noon
followed by Class AA at
6 p.m.
BSM’s Matt McGonigle
will swim in the 200-and
500-yard freestyles, John-
ny Freytag in the 500 free,
Liam Noble in the 100
back and the BSM 400 free
relay team in the Class A
meet.
In Class AA, SLP’s
Hayden Zheng is the de-
fending 100 breaststroke
champion and returns in
that event, plus the 200
IM. He will also swim a
leg on the 200 medley relay.

ter records while winning
the 200-yard Individual
Medley (1:50.61) and 100
breaststroke (55.79). He
also swam the third leg on
the state-qualifying 200
medley relay (1:37.21) and
anchored the 400 free relay.

A freshman on the Ori-
oles swim team, Barajas
landed on the Section 6AA
podium twice for his indi-
vidual swims, including a
seventh place in the 500 free
(4:56.58) and eighth place in
the 200 free (1:51.24).

fourth assists of the season
in a 3-2 win over Wayzata in
the Section 6AA semifi nals
Saturday. He set up the tying
and winning goals and has
12 assists and seven goals in
27 games this season.

at this week’s Class A state

2A fi nals Feb. 23 in Rich-
fi eld he was second in the
500-yard freestyle in 4:49.08
and fourth in the 200 free in
1:46.37.

The St. Louis Park soph-
omore set two Section 6AA
and Art Downey Aquatic
Center records while win-
ning the 200 individual
medley (1:50.61), beat-
ing the previous mark of
1:52.05 set in 2005 by Eden
Prairie’s Griffi n Beck.
He also won the 100
breaststroke in 55.79, low-
ering both meet and pool
record times of 56.15 set by
Edina’s Max Cartwright in
2011.
Zheng helped the Ori-
oles fi nish third in the team
standings, scoring 272
points. Edina won the sec-
tion title with 676.5 points
followed by Hopkins with
288.5 points, Park in third
place and fourth place went
to Cretin-Derham Hall
with 250.5 points.
Zheng anchored the fi nal
event of the afternoon, the
400 free relay with a time
of 3:22.66 to place fi fth in
the fi nals with the team of
senior Max Bechtold, ju-
nior Will Schweitering and
senior Luke Anderson.
Park started the day with
a third-place fi nish in the
200 medley relay in a state-
qualifying third-place time
of 1:37.21 with Schweit-
ering, Zheng, Anderson
and Bechtold. The state
qualifying time was set at
1:39.37.

vidual Medley in 2:07.21

standard of 1:58.53 as fi ve

Benilde-St. Margaret’s
faced Edina for the Sec-
tion 6AA title at Mariucci
on Wednesday with a trip
to the state boys hockey
tournament on the line.
The 75th annual tourna-
ment begins Wednesday,
March 6 at Xcel Energy
Center in St. Paul with all
four Class A games. The
Class AA quarterfi nals
will be played Thursday,
March 7 followed by semi-
fi nals on Friday, March 8
and the fi nals on Saturday,
March 9. The Class A title
game is at noon followed
by the Class AA title game
at 7 p.m. Mariucci Arena
will host the consolation
bracket games.
Basketball
St. Louis Park hosted
Kennedy in the opening
round of the Section 6-4A
girls basketball tourna-
ment on Wednesday, Feb.
27. The winner moves on
to face No. 1 Hopkins at
noon on Saturday, March
2 in Hopkins. The section
fi nal will be played at
the better seed at 7 p.m.
