City Manager Jeffrey Dahl administered the oath of of- fi ce to Offi cer Corinn Jimenez during the Feb. 19 city council meeting. Police Chief Mike Risvold then offered some background on Jimenez, detailing her fi ve and a half years with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Offi ce, where she worked as a patrol deputy, investigator, school resource of- fi cer and in court security. Jimenez earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from St. Cloud State University and speaks fl uent Spanish. “Corinn is not a big person, but she can pack a punch,” Ris- vold said, noting that the offi cer is a karate instructor and has a black belt. “Beyond this very impressive resume, Corinn is a joy to work with. Her trainers thus far have referred to her as very smart and they say she absorbs information like a sponge. She’s always posi- tive and has a smile on her face and that has a positive infl uence on the entire organization,” the police chief said. “I am thrilled that she has joined our team and I think she has a very bright fu- ture in front of her at the Way- zata Police Department.” In keeping with tradition, the police chief then asked Jimenez to invite the person of her choosing to pin a badge on her uniform. Jimenez chose her hus- band, Diego, to do the honors. The offi cer said she felt very honored to be with the Wayzata department and to continue working in law enforcement. “I feel very grateful to be able to give back to the community and I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone in Wayzata and getting to know them bet- ter,” Jimenez said. “I feel very fortunate to have so many great family friends and co-workers here today.” Memorial sign given to Mathews family The council meeting also in- cluded an opportunity to fur- ther honor the life and service of fallen Wayzata Police Offi cer Bill Mathews. Mathews, 47, was working to clear debris from U.S. Highway 12 in September 2017 when he was struck and killed by an im- paired and distracted driver. In May 2018, a new law was signed that designates the Way- zata segment of the highway as “Offi cer Bill Mathews Memo- rial Highway.” Two signs, which were paid for by the Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police, were installed in November along Highway 12 to serve as a reminder to motorists of the fallen offi cer. Risvold thanked the lawmak- ers in attendance at the council meeting, Sen. Paul Anderson of Plymouth, Sen. Dave Osmek of Mound and Rep. Jerry Hertaus of Greenfi eld, who authored and supported bills to designate the highway in Mathews’ honor. Osmek has also introduced a bill that would boost penalties for distracted driving. “We want passing motorists on Highway 12 to remember Of- fi cer Bill Mathews and the sac- rifi ce that he made and the sac- rifi ce that his family and friends See Police , Page 11 (SUBMITTED PHOTO) Wayzata Police Offi cer Corinn Jimenez has her husband, Diego, pin a badge on her uniform after being sworn in during the Feb. 19 city council meeting.
