Panoway progress continues in Wayzata
Efforts to revitalize the downtown Wayzata lakefront continue to move forward .
Construction on Wayzata ’ s long-discussed boardwalk project , a key project under the Panoway on Wayzata Bay initiative , remains on schedule to begin in the summer of 2023 .
The new 1,500-foot-long boardwalk will stretch from the Wayzata Depot to the Broadway docks , with a path on land leading to the Section Foreman House . Two lakeside overlook terraces will offer space to sit and provide universal access down to the water in the form of terrace steps and ADA-compliant sloped walks .
The work also includes the restoration of shoreline to help reverse contamination of Wayzata ’ s holding ponds by reintroducing native plants , trees and pollinator habitat .
If all goes according to schedule , construction on the boardwalk will begin in June , which would put the project on track to be completed by January 2024 .
The latest progress for Panoway follows the Wayzata City Council ’ s decision in early 2023 to approve construction documents for phase 2A ( boardwalk and community docks ) and phase 2B ( renovations to the Section Foreman House ).
Previous Panoway work has focused on Lake Street , which received a massive overhaul in 2020 with the widening of the road from Broadway Avenue to Barry Avenue and the conversion of a municipal parking lot into a new plaza park .
The work also included the expansion of the 600 block sidewalk , a new off-street bike and walking path along the south side of the street , an interactive water fountain , improved stormwater management , a new restroom facility , pedestrian safety improvements and a new 9 / 11 memorial .
The Lake Street work marked the first phase of the city ’ s Panoway project to create and enhance public space along the lake . Formerly known as Lake Effect , Panoway on Wayzata Bay is the city ’ s multi-year initiative to reshape and revitalize the community ’ s lakefront .
Phase 2B includes work to historically preserve and renovate the Section Foreman House to be used as a lakefront learning center and community space with an eco park outside the building .
Renovations to the Section Foreman House are on track to be wrapped up by December 2023 .
