Minnetonka , the lake-life getaway

Bearing Lake Minnetonka ’ s namesake , Minnetonka is one of the largest cities in the west metro .
According to the 2020 census , just over 53,000 people make Minnetonka home . With shoreline on Libbs Lake , about half of Gray ’ s Bay and slivers of Wayzata Bay , Minnetonka lays claim to much of the eastern shores of the lake .
In the summer , Gray ’ s Bay Marina is a popular hub for boaters . At the east end of Gray ’ s Bay is a small park highlighting the headwaters of the Minnehaha Creek . The headwaters , the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Bike Trail and wooded walking trails and parks offer outdoor adventure and nature access .
The city ’ s largest commercial hub is the Ridgedale area . Anchored by the Ridgedale Center , a 1.1 million-squarefoot mall containing about 140 tenants , the area features the new community park Ridgedale Commons , as well as Crane Lake Preserve .
Other neighborhoods budding with business are Minnetonka Mills , Glen Lake and Minnehaven , which have attracted young entrepreneurs opening breweries and restaurants .
Some of the city ’ s largest employers are Cargill , United
Health Group and Carlson Companies .
Minnetonka ’ s City Hall is where municipal government and community members can meet , with programs including a farmers market , the senior community center and community events .
Across from the city ’ s community center , residents can exercise at Williston Fitness Center . Amenities include whirlpools and saunas , five indoor tennis courts , group fitness classes and a pool .
A new and renovated police and fire department facility opened in 2021 on the city ’ s campus . It included the construction of a new fire station and the repurposing of the existing police and fire facility into a remodeled police station .
The Minnetonka City Council includes the mayor and six council members , all serving four-year terms . Meetings take place at 6:30 p . m . on the second and fourth Mondays of the month , unless otherwise noted .
The city is served by Hopkins , Minnetonka and Wayzata school districts . The majority of students attend either Hopkins or Minnetonka schools .
