INSPIRING ACHIEVEMENT /
Jamie Millar
EXPERIMENTING WITH
COLLEGE
J
amie Millar was a model student,
hard-working and on course to
get good grades. However, Jamie
unfortunately did not cope well with a
family bereavement and decided to leave
school knowing that she was capable of
more.
She left Largs Academy in the middle of fifth
year and soon began working as an administrative
assistant.
Instead of wondering what might have been, Jamie
decided to leave the office job and enrol on a course
at Ayrshire College.
The catalyst for change was having her daughter.
When the little one turned one, Jamie started
College to study Biomedical Science at the
Kilwinning campus.
She said “It was really enjoyable. It was hard work,
but if you focus and you really want to do it, then it’s
really worth it.
“It was really enjoyable, and it’s hard
work, but if you focus and you really
want to do it then it’s really worth it.
“I loved my course at college - which
was probably down to all the lecturers
in the science department.”
THE STUDENT VOICE: EDITION 4
“I loved my course at college - which was probably
down to all the lecturers in the science department.”
Now 25 years old, Jamie is in her final year at
university.
“Most of the people on my course moved onto
university,” said Jamie.
“We had a real good mix in our class of people
coming straight from school and mature students in
their late 20s/30s.
“Hopefully, once I qualify I will go into haematology,
probably within a hospital, I quite fancy working in
research.”
