This lesson was inspired by an activity from http://www.dickblick.com/ lesson-plans/sound-sculpture-inspired-by-jean-tinguely. My initial thoughts were that the students were just going to put “anything” together. To my very pleasant surprise, they were very intentional about where, why and how they placed their metal objects. As I was observing the students, they would test and discuss the placement of objects based on the sound, vibration and amount of energy the contact created. They would share their ideas and collaborate with others for “approval” until it was just right. Integrated Lesson: Soil Paintings My original experience with this lesson was during a workshop through the Nasher Museum of Art in Durham, NC. I have since found additional resources including the site posted here: http:// www.doctordirt.org/ . The students were asked to collect sample soils from their homes, which in-turn was used during our science investigations throughout this unit. 10
