UG LOAD AND HAUL
Joy Global has underground hard rock equipment operating in the US and Mexico amongst other locations . This shows an LT-650 loader loading a 16TD truck positive attributes such as their robustness and versatility . Bill Maki , Senior Product Manager – Loaders and Trucks , told IM : “ We are still supporting the existing MTI fleet while we work to upgrade the line . Late last year we released the first upgrade , our 16TD truck which is based on the popular DT-1804 model , a stalwart unit in the product line for many years . The 16TD takes that reliable model and builds on it to include lower hood lines for improved visibility , a digital operator display , shorter turning radius , ground level maintenance , and faster speed ramps .” Several similar enhancements are in the works , including the 4LD loader , a comprehensive redesign of the LT-350 loader . The new 4LD machine will feature increased carrying capacity and z-bar link improvement ; better operator comfort / safety due to the ROPS / FOPS enclosed cab with climate control and upgraded controls ; and increased ease of maintenance due to improved design .
Maki says that on these upgrades , the key changes are enhancing safety , making the machine more maintenance friendly and improving ergonomics for the operator . “ Though these hard rock ready trucks and loaders were designed with operator safety , reliability and ease of use / maintenance in mind , the upgraded versions of these products are focused on enhancing those features . We are working to make them even easier to use , and easier to get in and out of .”
In terms of customer base , Joy says it has “ a significant population of machines in a platinum mine in Montana as well as copper , silver and gold mines in Mexico .”
On being able to use Joy Global ’ s footprint to enhance the reach of the fleet range , it now includes locations in 20 countries , which “ has definitely helped because our service capabilities and reach meant being able to tap into existing sales and / or service relationships with mines around the globe .”
At MINExpo 2016 , Joy will launch its new line of hybrid LHDs . Michael Lyten , Product Manager - Hard Rock Haulage Systems says of the group ’ s new 18 t hard rock LHD : “ An 18 t LHD incorporating the JOY SR Hybrid Drive has been undergoing successful production testing in Australia . We have adapted the SR technology used on P & H surface wheel loaders to significantly reduce heat emissions , providing customers the option of operating additional 18HDs with existing ventilation systems or even reducing their ventilation requirements .”
RDH continues battery evolution
RDH Mining Equipment Ltd has been an industry leader in the development of fully independent , battery electric underground mining equipment . In 2011 , it introduced the first in the Evolution battery equipment line , the Muckmaster 300EB , a 3 yd 3 battery powered LHD . The following year it introduced the Haulmaster 800-20EB , a 20 t battery powered underground haul truck . “ With over 18 units in the field , both models have been working underground since their introduction and have proven their value to the mining industry . Reduced costs in terms of ventilation , maintenance , and energy , a healthier work environment , and increased production are but a few of the benefits of battery electric mining
equipment over traditional diesel machinery .” In 2015 , due to the success of their battery technology and performance of the previously developed models , RDH introduced a larger , more powerful underground loader to its Evolution battery equipment line , the Muckmaster 600EB , the world ’ s first 6 yd 3 capacity battery powered LHD for hard rock .
“ With over five years of underground testing and production , the RDH team has the expertise that only underground working experience can provide . In keeping with a guiding design principle , ‘ simplifying heavy equipment ’, RDH has simplified and improved its battery systems , ensuring a product for customers that is more economical and easier to operate and maintain .”
With three units currently working in full production , the Muckmaster 600EB has the same dimensions as the company ’ s standard 6 yd 3 diesel loader and all of the features including ride control , enclosed operators cabin with AC and heat , remote control , and a camera system . The loader has a charging time of two hours , incorporates a battery management system ( BMS ) and a 400 amp LiFePO 4 battery pack . “ When it comes to the harsh conditions of hard rock mining , the LiFePO 4 battery technology offers the greatest combination of performance , safety , cost , reliability and environmental characteristics ; is tolerant to abuse , is extremely stable in overcharge or short circuit conditions , is able to withstand high temperatures without decomposing , is not prone to thermal runaway , will not burn , does not contain heavy metals , does not exhibit ‘ memory effect ’, has an excellent shelf life , long cycle life , is maintenance free , provides the maximum power available until fully discharged ( no voltage sag ), and can be safely rapidly recharged .”
When compared to their traditional diesel counterparts , “ battery technology offers a lower life cycle cost ( LCC ), is safer to operate , and
