31 Teams To Compete at Majestic Park
PORTLAND, Ore. – All seven Great Northwest Athletic
softball teams head to Las Vegas this weekend to compete
in the sixth annual Desert Stinger collegiate softball
tournament.
LAST WEEK: Friday – Tucson Division II Lead-Off Classic (St.
Mary’s, Tex. 4, Western Oregon 1; Western Oregon 11, New
Haven 6). Saturday – Western Washington 2-3 at Chaminade 7-0;
Saint Martin’s 0-2 at UC-San Diego 3-3; Simon Fraser 1-2 at Hawaii
Pacific 3-6; Tucson Division II Lead-Off Classic (West Texas A&M
5, Western Oregon 1; Fort Lewis 10, Western Oregon 7, 8 inn.).
Sunday – Saint Martin’s 1-1 at UC San Diego 3-2; Tucson Division II
Lead-Off Classic (East Central Oklahoma 13, Western Oregon 12, 8
inn.; Western Oregon 4, Molloy 2).
The tournament is hosted by GNAC member Montana
State University Billings.
The GNAC schools are among 31 teams from seven
different conferences which begin play Friday at Majestic
Park.
In addition to the seven GNAC teams the tournament will
also feature six teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference and five from the California Collegiate Athletic
Association.
THIS WEEK: Monday – Simon Fraser 4-10 at Chaminade 3-0 (1st
game, 10 inn.); Western Washington 8-2 at BYU-Hawaii 1-1.
Tuesday – Simon Fraser 9-10 at BYU-Hawaii 1-6; Western
Washington 8-1 at Hawaii Pacific 9-5 (1st game, 8 inn.).
Wednesday – Concordia 2-3 at Saint Martin’s 3-11; Northwest
Nazarene 0-4 at William Jessup 4-6. Friday – MSUB Las Vegas

Also entered are four teams from the PacWest and
Northern Sun conferences, three teams from the
Heartland Conference and one from the Lone Star
Conference.
Five nationally-ranked schools are entered including the
PacWest’s Dixie State which reached the national
championship game last season and are ranked third in the
NFCA pre-season poll.
For Central Washington and Montana State Billings the
games will be their season openers.
The other five GNAC teams all made their season debuts
last week and earlier this week in California and Arizona.
Western Oregon began its season at the Tucson Lead-Off
Classic winning two of six games. Two of the losses were
in extra innings.
Saint Martin’s opened its campaign last weekend with a
four-game series at UC-San Diego. The Saints, who split
two home games Wednesday with Concordia (Ore.), lost
all four, but allowed just 11 runs to the CCAA team.
