Advancement Strategy: Memphis Advancement Appeal to Individuals Provides Jubilee Schools with Support for 1,500 Students “It’s a rare moment when your simple gesture could transform someone’s life. This is one of those moments.” 12 So begins an appeal by the Jubilee Schools of the Diocese of Memphis, Tennessee to encourage donations from individuals. One of those moments brings to a personal level the real need for a partnership where individuals offer a hand up, not a handout to the economically challenged families of Memphis. A strong development appeal has resulted in nine Jubilee Schools being able to offer an excellent education to over 1,500 students each year. In 1999, Bishop J. Terry Steib announced that several previously closed urban schools would reopen as Jubilee Schools and serve children living in impoverished neighborhoods of Memphis. The schools were named in honor of the Jubilee Year 2000, a year designated to focus upon mercy for the poor. The Jubliee model is recognized nationally for combining the best of traditional schooling with current best teaching practices to deliver a solid pre-K through high school education. Students are also formed spiritually and morally. When it’s time to go out into the world, they are equipped to give back to others. Jubilee Schools provide the means, structure, and discipline necessary for academic success from an early age. Family involvement is a strategic key. Parents sign a pledge vowing to do what it takes to succeed, from attending church regularly as a family, to completing homework, to understanding their roles in society— sacrifices are required. All families pay something; but scholarships close the gap and make it possible for many children to attend a Jubilee school. The appeal made to Jubilee donors promises an investment in success by making a real, flesh-and-blood difference in the life of a needy child. Miracles are happening in Memphis, where boys and girls are becoming educated, employable, responsible citizens; and Smart Tuition is delighted to be of service to the nine Jubilee Schools and their families. “I wouldn’t be able to afford it by myself, and the donors should be praised and thanked.” ~ Jebee Harvey, Jubilee School parent. 13
