IT IS INCREDIBLE TO HAVE THESE ARTISTS COME TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE AND TO EXPLORE THEIR WORK IN FRONT OF SUCH THOUGHTFUL, ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCES... The first will be a brand new production of Charles Mee’s exuberant play Big Love, directed by longtime collaborator (and Old Hats director) Tina Landau. After joining us last in 2012 with the world premiere of his play Heartless, Signature’s 1996-97 Playwright-in-Residence Sam Shepard returns with A Particle of Dread (Oedipus Variations), a remaking of the Oedipus tale presented in collaboration with Ireland’s renowned Field Day Theatre Company and starring Stephen Rea. Our season will conclude with a world premiere written and directed by Athol Fugard, one of our most daring and important writers and the first Residency One playwright produced at The Pershing Square Signature Center. It is incredible to have these artists come together in one place and to explore their work in front of such thoughtful, enthusiastic audiences — all for $25 a ticket, thanks to the generous supporters of the Signature Ticket Initiative. When the Center was first built, the hope was to construct an environment in which productions could be in dialogue with each other, and with the Signature community. We are delighted to say, thanks to our dedicated artists, staff, and audiences, that that hope has come true. Thank you for joining us this season, and for helping us make this home complete. n Sincerely, JAMES HOUGHTON Stephen Rea is appearing with the permission of Actors’ Equity Association. The Producer gratefully acknowledges Actors’ Equity Association for its assistance of this production. Founding Artistic Director, Signature Theatre Athol Fugard and Sam Shepard meet for the first time in the Signature Lobby as James Houghton looks on, 2013. 4
