Which non-theatre artists and works inspire you? Branden: I find myself idolizing a lot of visual artists – Adrian Piper, Glenn Ligon – and a lot of dance makers – Sarah Michelson, John Jasperse, Ralph Lemon. I return to a handful of poets and novelists with some frequency: Toni Morrison, Frank O’Hara, Louise Glück, Flannery O’Connor. And Joss Whedon may have had a bigger influence on me than I’d like to admit. Martha: President Obama and Henri Matisse. What are five plays, or pieces, you think everyone should read or see? Branden: Long Day’s Journey into Night by Eugene O’Neill, Far Away by Caryl Churchill, In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks, The Piano Lesson by August Wilson, and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.
