LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Sí Magazine! On behalf of our family of
talented and dedicated individuals, I extend ‘un abrazo fuerte’ to all our readers.
Sí Magazine emphasizes educational access and is aimed at Latino youth,
their families, and teachers. It is focused on bringing the best of Latino youth
directly to classrooms and individual students through the use of technology. Sí
Magazine can be downloaded to desktop computers, iPads, iPhones or you can
order a print copy.
Throughout my extensive travels across the nation speaking with, mentoring and
motivating our beautiful Latino youth, I have felt their intense creative energy
and witnessed an exemplary level of mastery that provide a much needed
counterpoint to a narrative of gangs, violence and underachievement.
Whether living in the barrios of urban centers, in rural communities or migrant
labor camps, their resilience in the face of daily challenges renews and energizes
our spirit. Indeed, the youth featured in Sí Magazine will give us hope and serve
as models for other Latino youth while older individuals will share their consejos
y animo.
Sí Magazine recognizes the many accomplishments by Latino youth who may
work the agricultural fields or hold two jobs to help their families, and still go to
school. The magazine will provide a forum to affirm their dreams and aspirations
and will respect their spirit of resistance from the ‘Corazon’ that cannot be
extinguished nor denied.
I want to extend an invitation to all our readers to submit writing or creative work
of Latino youth for consideration to be published in upcoming issues. The canvas
upon which Sí Magazine paints is broad and expansive. From the arts, music,
academics to community involvement, let us know about youth you feel exemplify
the spirit of Sí Magazine.
