Dr. Little presented a paper, “New Sounds, New Models, New York,” at the international Classical: NEXT conference, in Vienna, Austria. He also completed new compositions for the Kronos Quartet and new vocal works for the upcoming 21c. Liederabend at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). With his ensemble Newspeak, he performed concerts in New York City and Washington, D.C., receiving acclaim in reviews in the New York Times and the Washington Post. Most recently, he was in residence at the University of Notre Dame recording his composition “Haunt of Last Nightfall” with Third Cost Percussion, for release on New Amsterdam Records this coming winter. Associate Professor of Music and Director of Music Education Jeffrey Marlatt, Ph.D., presented a session, “I Think Therefore I Teach: Developmental Teaching Philosophies in Music Teaching and Learning,” at the 12th Mountain Lake Colloquium in Mountain Lake, Va. Shenandoah Conservatory colleagues, Associate Professor of Music Stephanie Standerfer and May 2013 Bachelor of Music in Music Education graduates Brittany McGaffic and Ethan Lawrence participated as co-presenters. This year’s Colloquium theme spurred conversations related to re-visioning and reinventing music teacher education practice. Dr. Marlatt, Dr. Standerfer, McGaffic and Lawrence’s session included strategies for guiding the formulation of music teacher identities and teaching philosophies. 30 Auxiliary Adjunct Associate Professor of Theory and Music History Thomas Mitts, D.M.A., recorded two landmarks of early 20th century French organ music, “Symphonie III of Louis Vierne” and “Symphonie-Passion of Marcel Dupré,” on a CD to be released this fall. He also served as a judge for the organ playing competition sponsored by the American Guild of Organists at their Region III Convention in Winchester. Professor of Trumpet and Conducting Scott A. Nelson, D.M.A., adjudicated concert band, jazz band and orchestra festivals for Festivals of Music and Music in the Parks in Williamsburg, Va., and Virginia Beach, Va. Dr. Nelson performed a series of concerts in the Maryland Public Schools with the Maryland Symphony Brass Quintet. He also performed with the Maryland Symphony in their Educational Youth Concert Series at the Maryland Theatre. He served as an adjudicator for the Maryland Symphony Principal Trumpet Audition and performed as principal trumpet with the Ocala Symphony at its July 4th Concert at the Top of the World Center for the Performing Arts near Ocala, Fla. Dr. Nelson also participated in a summer conducting workshop at Shenandoah University, and he served as adjudicator for the American Legion National Concert Band Competition in Houston, Texas, at the American Legion National Convention. Associate Professor of Saxophone Timothy Roberts, D.M.A., served as wind adjudicator for Fairfax County Band Directors’ Young Artist Competition this spring. He also traveled to Paris, France, to meet with Selmer Paris Saxophones for trials on their new “Concept” alto saxophone mouthpiece and performed a recital with Associate Professor and Anna Lee Van Buren Chair in Clarinet Garrick Zoeter, M.M., in Friendship Heights, Md., in August. He released a solo CD, “Zynodoa,” this summer. The CD features contemporary solo works for saxophone with collaborations by Zoeter and 2013 piano alumnus Silvan Negrutiu, D.M.A. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Trumpet J. Carlton Rowe, M.M., was a featured soloist in the “Concerto for Three Trumpets” by G. P. Telemann as part of a River Series concert and a Pops on the Potomac concert presented by the Chesapeake Orchestra. On the same program, Rowe served as principal trumpet for “Music for the Royal Fireworks and Water Music” by G. F. Handel. Also with the Chesapeake Orchestra, he was a featured soloist in a concert including the music of Aaron Copland. Rowe continues to perform with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Brass Express and the New Sousa Band. He was honored to have been mentioned in the new Hickman Music Editions book “Trumpet Greats: A Biographical Dictionary,” edited by David Hickman, Michel Laplace and Edward Tarr. In a foreword to the book, Leonard Candelaria stated it was “an extensive and detailed overview of our trumpet ancestors and our trumpet brethren.” Assistant Professor of Bassoon and Music Theory Ryan D. Romine, D.M.A., spent the summer months teaching at the Roanoke Youth Symphony Summer Music Institute in Ferrum, Va., and New England Music Camp in Sidney, Maine. He also released his debut solo album “Premiére” on the Blue Griffin label. Professor of Music/Cello Clyde Thomas Shaw, M.M., and Director of Instrumental Chamber Music and Associate Professor of Viola and Chamber Music Doris M. Lederer, A.D., served as artist/faculty members at the Interlochen Arts Chamber Music Week in Michigan.
