It’s day five in Rwanda. As she walks with her fellow group
members, senior music therapy major Kara Whipple notices a
group of women sitting together, talking in Kinyarwandan. As she
approaches the group, a translator explains the American traditions
of a female receiving an engagement proposal. The women sit
back and enjoy, laughing and talking. Though the GCP group
does not know exactly what the women are saying, each one can
still communicate by observing their reactions to different parts of
the story. The way Whipple describes it, no matter where you are
in the world, “a group of women is a group of women,” and she
immediately links their social rapport to the way she interacts with
her girlfriends.
One of the Rwandan mothers hands her baby to Whipple, and he
falls asleep in her arms as she carries him. The group gets to work.
