I graduated from Francis Marion University with a degree
in art and have always wanted to own a shop. Before having
my children, I spent a couple of years in interior design, then
in sales. For the past 15 years, I have been a very happy stayat-home mom raising my children. But, I still knew that some
day when the time was right, I wanted to have my own shop.
I opened a booth at a Palmetto Peddlers antique mall about
three years ago. This gave me a little taste of what a shop
would entail.
Last year, I was presented with the opportunity to open
my shop and carry Chalk Paint®. After much prayer and discussion with my family, we decided to go for it. My husband
(who still works his full time job), children, sister and parents have been very supportive of this venture - all helping
out with different aspects from painting, keeping the books
and helping customers. It really is a family affair! I opened
Uncommonly Southern in December 2013. We carry vintage
items, antiques and custom painted furniture. We are the
local “stockists” of Chalk Paint® Decorative Paint by Annie
Sloan. We also offer workshops where you can get hands-on
experience with Chalk Paint®.
This project was done using Chalk Paint®, a water based paint that is designed
to paint furniture and accessories with little-to-no prep work and sanding, and no
priming on most surfaces, including wood, metal and stone.
This chest was a typical French Provencial chest from the 1960s. It’s not such a great
color, but what wonderful lines! We dusted the cobwebs off since it had been stored in
a barn. Then, we opened our Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint® and (1-2) painted away. This
chest took two good coats of paint and a touch-up coat since we were going from such
a light color to a darker one. Chalk Paint® dries so fast, however, I was able to paint each
coat right behind the other and had it finished in just a couple of hours.

Once the paint was dry, I applied (3) Gold Leaf around the drawers and on the medallions. Finally, (4) I applied my wax final coat. This time, I used a dark wax to create more
drama in the final finish. I waited a couple of hours and lightly buffed the wax, and that’s
it... It was done!
“I have used Chalk Paint® Decorative Paint by Annie Sloan for
several years to create both rustic finishes and modern finishes. It is user friendly and easy to work with, as well as easy
to clean up. You can literally start a piece in the morning and
have it finished by evening.” - Kelley Hyman
