GALLOWAY & MOSELEY
FINE JEWELERS
“Give the people quality merchandise and service, and they will support you.”

O
ne of the things I have enjoyed most as the owner of She Magazine has been getting to know the people behind the great businesses whose support make this
magazine possible. A recent visit with Danny Chandler, co-owner of Galloway &
Moseley Fine Jewelers, yielded the details of this month’s Shop Talk. When I set-
tled into a chair in the office of the Florence location, I was simply on a fact-finding mission for a series
of ads that I wanted to design for future She Mag issues. While my editorial duties do not allow for much
time to design ads anymore, I still love the challenge. On this particular day, I uncovered a gem of a
story (no pun intended) that I wanted to share in the business spotlight for this Celebrate Your Age issue.
It turns out that Galloway & Moseley, one of the most prestigious and well-respected jewelry stores
in our state, has a milestone of a birthday celebration just ahead. On April 12, 1935, Galloway & Moseley
Jewelers opened their doors for business. With celebrating She Magazine’s 13th birthday this month,
I am well aware of the tremendous effort that goes into starting, growing and maintaining a business. I can
only imagine the life-blood that has been poured out over the years by those who nurtured and cared for
Galloway & Moseley Jewelers for eight decades. Knowing the commitment, hard work and dedication
that goes into building a business, I understand the well-deserved pride that Danny Chandler and Britten
Moseley must feel to share ownership in a company with such longevity. Eighty years in business is a major feat,
especially in the era in which we now live, where customer loyalty is not what it once was and maintaining
a successful business is more of a challenge than ever before. Equally as impressive as the candles atop
Galloway & Moseley’s birthday cake is the level of respect and appreciation that Galloway & Moseley has
from its customers and the communities in which it serves.
So, what is the history behind the iconic Galloway & Moseley Jewelers? What has happened in the dash
between April 1935 and the Galloway & Moseley of today? The history of Galloway & Moseley dates back
to April 1935 when J.D. Galloway and G.B. Moseley opened the first Galloway & Moseley. The first store
carried fine gifts and bridal wear. By 1955, the business relocated to 130 South Main Street in Sumter,
and satellite locations were opened soon after in Charleston, Dillon, Darlington, Hartsville, Manning,
and Marion. Adapting to the changes in the jewelry industry and the communities they served, the
smaller stores were dissolved into what became the largest store in Sumter. >>continued...
