Traditions Story by Ashley Elvington • Laura McBryde Photography TARA Barrineau TIS’ THE SEASON forTRADITIONS Reflecting on the Christmases of her childhood, Tara Barrineau’s heart is overwhelmed with the warmth of fond memories. “One of our family traditions was to pack in the car, listen to Christmas music and drive around for hours loo king at Christmas lights. I remember going caroling with my church group and attending our Christmas cantata at church. Then, on Christmas Day, we would make our way to all the grandparents’ houses where we ate, opened presents, and my brother and I got to play with our cousins that we didn’t see that often.” Tara was always excited for her favorite season to return. “From a very young age, I had a special place in my heart for Christmas... not only for the beautiful lights and gorgeous holiday displays, but, most importantly, because of the celebration of Jesus’ birth. As a Christian, I try to live every day letting His love and light shine through me. But, it’s during this season that I feel that everyone’s heart is a little more receptive to the goodness and grace of others. This magical feeling sparks the deepest parts of my soul, stirring excitement for me all throughout the year.” 26 DECEMBER 2015 Known among others (especially her co-workers) as the woman whose “thing” is Christmas, Tara enjoys adding to her festive collection. “No matter where my family and I go throughout the year, I am instantly drawn to anything Christmas-related. Every vacation, I make sure to purchase an ornament so that, when it comes time to decorate, I’m not just placing an ornament on the tree but rather a memory for our family to enjoy.” When their daughter was very young, Tara and Brooks started the tradition of giving each other ornaments on Christmas Eve. Luckily for Tara, her children also participate in her beloved ornament tradition, making their celebration truly special. Each family member has his own tree. “My daughter’s tree is decorated with pink and purple and everything girly, while my son’s is decorated with everything that little boys like, from hunting ornaments to trains, boats and cars. For my husband, our bedroom tree is fishing-themed, since that is his passion. He graciously loans me fishing lures as long as I give them back when Christmas is over!”  CONTINUED . . .
