Topic: Lionfish Invasion

There are 12 species of lionfish. Two are invasive to the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean: the red lionfish, Pterois volitans, and the common lionfish, Pterois miles.

DNA evidence traces all lionfish in the Atlantic back to only six to eight female lionfish.

Lionfish produce 30,000 to 40,000 eggs every few days.

Lionfish are sexually mature by 1 year old and can live up to 16 years.

Lionfish can eat up to 30 times their own stomach volume.
