Johnston had hoped the council would also stimulate better indexing and preservation of Scottish records and that it would fulfill a most useful purpose.

Today we talk of the Scottish diaspora, the Commonwealth has replaced the Dominion and those from overseas can do much of their research online prior to their visit to Scotland. It was Tom Johnston's own initiative and vision that set Scotland at the forefront of ancestry research in the world, a position we have maintained and we owe it to him to see continued into the future.
