Fulfilling Mission as BVM
In the 1960s Gwen was active in an
interfaith group that educated and raised
awareness around the lettuce and table
grape boycotts being led by Cesar Chavez
(an American farm worker, labor leader,
and civil rights activist who co-founded
the National Farm Workers Association).
In the 1970s, while living in Portland,
Ore., she participated in White Train
Prayer Vigils, protesting the transport of
nuclear materials for the Trident ballistic
missile submarines based in Washington.
Upon moving to Chicago and beginning her tenure at 8th Day Center for
Justice, Gwen became actively involved
with the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the
Death Penalty (ICADP). In addition to
