Arxv Honorable Mention
Brian Bermeo’s ’11 artwork inspired by Hannah Hoch’s Bouquet of Eyes (shown at right) received an honorable mention in the 2011 Arxv competition.
Holocaust Survivor
In early December, Holocaust survivor Sami Steigmann visited the fifth graders. Mr. Steigmann was just a year and a half when he and his parents were sent to a Nazi labor camp in the Ukraine. Mr. Steigmann spoke to the boys about the causes of the Holocaust, and of his personal experience and how it has impacted his life. He spoke of the need for boys to recognize that pain and joy are “two sides of the same coin” and that to experience joy a person must also acknowledge pain. He noted the importance of forgiving others, as it is only through forgiveness that we forgive ourselves, and urged the boys to cherish each day of freedom and to volunteer for the greater good.
