RPO resound 20th Anniversary Newsletter As a globally revered cultural institution, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) performs approximately 180 concerts a year to a worldwide audience of more than half a million people. Its musicians however, are equally at home participating in its ground-breaking and award-winning Community & Education programme – RPO resound, which last year celebrated its 20th anniversary. Since its inception in 1993, RPO resound has been at the forefront of delivering orchestral outreach projects, successfully underpinning the RPO’s extensive programme of UK regional performances and ultimately enhancing lives through the power of music. Fulfilling more than 60 projects a year involving approximately 7500 participants, RPO resound delivers high-quality music-making experiences in an array of community settings, from rehabilitative programmes in prisons to projects with homeless people. The overarching objective is to leave a lasting legacy by harnessing the transformative power of music to improve participants’ aspirations, abilities and life chances. The momentous achievements of the first twenty years of RPO resound were celebrated at a Gala Dinner hosted by the Orchestra’s Patron, HRH The Duke of York, in Windsor Castle on 5 November 2013. During the evening an inspirational short film, narrated by Stephen Fry, was premiered; it demonstrates the breadth and diversity of RPO resound’s projects and the profound effect it has on people’s lives. The film can be viewed on RPO resound’s website: www.rpo.co.uk/rpo_in_action.php This special edition of our newsletter explores RPO resound from the perspective of those whose lives have been influenced by the programme, including a participant, the Orchestra’s musicians, a long-term project partner and a special tribute from HRH The Duke of York. We hope you enjoy it!
