ROCKNATION ISSUE 21
SPHERIC UNIVERSE EXPERIENCE
Interview by Tom Mathers
Rocknation: The first single from your album “The New Eve” was
“The Day I Died”. You shot a video for that, please tell us how you
decided the concept behind it and who produced it.
S.U.E.: The very first SUE video was produced by Vince Gorgetti
a young, amazingly talented French producer who previously
worked in L.A. He defined the concept together with us. We had
this beautiful model Lisa Michelle Dixon available to shoot the
video with us, she took the ‘’main role’’ so to speak. That was a
great experience for all of us.
Rocknation: How did the press and fans respond to this release
compared to your previous releases?
S.U.E.: Both press and fans were quite critical about the latest
album, due to its different approach. We used to release ‘’pure’’
progressive metal albums, but with The New Eve we wanted to try
something a little bit different – more riff-oriented songs, less odd
time signatures, less prog clichés, whilst maintaining the SUE sound
and melodies, which is our deep identity. Unfortunately our fanbase
is very true to progmetal and the different approach was not
understood and followed. However, The New Eve songs are quite
successful on stage! As the music is more about the energy, people
seem to enjoy the songs played
live much more than
the studio album. Unlike our
successful studio albums
which are more difficult to
render on stage. Life’s a bitch
uh ?;-)
Rocknation: Last AugustSeptember you teamed up with
KINGCROW for a European
mini-tour. What was some of
the high lights of that?
S.U.E.: Was a very, very pleasant experience, touring with talented
Italian proggers Kingcrow. The highlights would be the amazing
show in Uden, Netherlands with lovely Dutch fans, the day-offs
hanging around and having fun all toghether, the backstage jokes
producedby 6 Frenchies and 7 Italian jokers! All those things that
the fans can’t always see before and after the shows that make a
tour special!
Rocknation: You live in France. What is the music scene like there
compared to other Europe countries?
S.U.E.: The metal scene is poor here. Not much decent venues,
promoters and fans. French metal bands struggle to find gigs and
people to pack the houses. Now the rest of the music industry –
pop, electro, rock, hip hop, jazz – is doing fine, thanks! :-p But the
underground progressive metal is suffering like hell. Ironically,
the more we drive away from home, the more fans we find in the
venues.
Rocknation: What plans do you have for 2014?
S.U.E.: Writing our 5th record, coming back to what we do best,
progressive metal with killer riffs and technical twists, like Anima
for instance. Also, we have an exciting gig coming up in June, as
opening band for the Manticora/
Seven Kingdoms tour in our
hometown Nice, France.
Rocknation: Thank you for
taking time for this interview
and last words to the fans.
S.U.E.: Thank YOU for interviewing SUE! We can’t wait to
release the new album somewhere in 2015 and meet you
guys again on tour! We miss
you. Keep the horns up lml
