ROCKNATION ISSUE 22 KELDIAN Interview by Tom Mathers What was different this time in the studio compared to previous Keldian releases? The biggest difference was the fact that we worked in Arild’s home studio and not a commercial studio like before. And this time we had windows! We could actually see the world outside, and that removed the sense of claustrophobia you easily get in the studio. What was some of the influences and writing process for the latest “Outbound” release? Some of the songs date back a few years, while some of them were written on the spot while recording. We really have the same influences that we always had, which is classic rock and metal music. We’ve always been big fans of 80s hard rock, since we grew up in that era. But we also wanted the album to be a little more aggressive-sounding than our previous records, a little more dirt on the guitars, and a little more anger in the lyrics. We think the mix and mastering of this record kicks ass. It broadens the scope of Keldian while being undeniably Keldian-sounding. What are your most favorite tracks on “Outbound” and why? Chris: Personally I’m happy with all the tracks, of course! But I guess I have a particularly weak spot for Morning Light Mountain and Run For Your Life, although my favorite tracks tend to alternate with time. Arild: The first and last for me. Burn the Sky is a really great opener. It catchy, to the point and really embodies the spirit of the whole album in one song. F.T.L. is a favourite perhaps mostly because of the theme. The moment mankind achieves faster than light flight... come on, what’s not to like. I also love the fact that we could tie this moment to the past by using a few excerpts from John F. Kennedy “moon speech” in the song.
