I cannot do it alone
– want to join in?
Poul Gernes (1925-1996) is one of the truly great
Danish artists of the post-war generation. Many
people know his decoration of the Palads Cinema
on Axeltorv in Copenhagen; on the other hand
no popular breakthrough has materialized for his
works in the world of public institutions. Louisiana
Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen wants
to remedy this with the exhibition Poul Gernes: I
cannot do it alone – want to join in? In some strange
way Gernes appears today both as a cool designer
and as the inveterate critic of capitalism, and for
others again as the mediator of a new, popular art.
Cool, colorful, provocative, wildly experimental and
visionary—Louisiana’s summer exhibition on Poul
Gernes is simultaneously a powerful humorous,
beautiful and ambiguous story about this interesting
Danish artists. The exhibition will be available for
visitors until the 16th of October.
