for its gumwood and bougainvillea flowers.
With a history dating back to the Archaic
Period, Alçatı was once known as Agrilia,
the center of Ionia. Before the population
exchange agreement, the destination was
mostly populated by the Greeks that came
from Chios. Many of the characteristics of
the location, such as its viticulture and stone
houses, were passed on by those Greeks.
Of course, when talking about Alaçatı,
we must pay closer attention to its iconic stone
houses. Built by the Greeks, they have been
continually protected and today, are being
restored one by one. Nowadays, these houses
are used as hotels and restaurants. The stones
used to build these abodes are a region specific
type and help to keep the house warm in
winters and cool in summers. Another feature
of these houses are the colors of their doors
and windows-- all blue and green, the colors
that define Alaçatı. Sprouted from a summer
story, many of these homes also have purple
bougainvillea decorating them with their
wonderful fragrance.

Geçmişi antik çağa kadar uzanan, eski
adı Agrilia olan Alaçatı; o dönemin önemli
devletlerinden İyonya’nın merkezinde yer
alır. Mübadele dönemi öncesinde bölgede
Sakız adasından gelen Rumlar yaşamaktadır.
Bağcılık, şarap yapımı, taş evler gibi bölgenin
karakterini oluşturan pek çok özellik, Rumlardan miras kalmıştır.
Alaçatı denince tarihi taş evlerinden
bahsetmeden olmaz. Rumlar tarafından inşa
edilmiş olan bu evler, günümüze dek korunmuş olup tek tek restore edilmektedir. Şimdilerde bu evler pansiyon, otel veya restoran
olarak hizmet vermektedir. Alaçatı evlerinde
kullanılan taş, bölgeye has bir taştır. Evlerin
içini yazın serin, kışın sıcak tutar. Bu evlerin
bir diğer özelliği de kapı ve pencerelerinin
mavi, yeşil gibi Alaçatı’yı betimleyen renklerde olmasıdır. Bir yaz hikayesinden fırlayan
bu evlerin pencerelerinden mor renkte, mis
kokulu begonvil çiçekleri sarkar.
