VRIJMARKT (FREE MARKET)
Famous for its canals, Amsterdam
features a most splendid boat parade during
King’s Day. Thousands of illuminated boats
pass through with people dancing on them,
resembling an orange sea. Even if you are
not able take part on a boat, watching it from
the banks is a joy like no other.
In Vrijmarkt (Free Market) people have
free rein to sell their used goods on the streets
without a permit or tax. Overflowing from
the narrow streets of the city, the stalls cover
all sidewalks, transforming the city into one
giant bazaar. Apart from second hand goods,
refreshments and food are offered in their
related stalls as well. The deserts get orange
toppings in honor of the day and the spirit of
the festival leaks to the food as well.
If you happen to come to the Netherlands
at the end of the April, make sure to pack an
extra orange colored wardrobe!

Kralın Günü’nde kanallarıyla ünlü Amsterdam’daki tekne geçitinden bahsetmeden
olmaz. Işık saçan binlerce tekne ve üstünde
dans eden insanlar, turuncu bir denizi andırır. Teknede yer alamasanız bile karadan bu
geçiti izlemek apayrı bir keyiftir.
Vrijmarkt’ta (Özgür Pazar) bu güne özel
vergisiz satış yapılır. İsteyen herkes sokaklarda, parklarda ikinci el eşyalarını satabilir. Kentin dar sokaklarına sığmayan pazar,
tüm kaldırımlara yayılır; kent koca bir pazar
alanına dönüşür. İkinci el ürünlerin yanısıra
yiyecek içecek standları da kurulur. Tatlılar,
güne özel olarak turuncu bir krema ile kaplanır. Festival ruhu yiyeceklere de yansır.
Olur da yolunuz nisan sonunda Hollanda’ya düşerse yanınıza turuncu kıyafetlerinizi
de almayı unutmayın.
