Thanks to the research by fish biologists (primarily Robert Behnke and Mary Peacock), and the efforts of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the hatchery carefully rebuild the beast. Starting in 2006, they released the aquatic apex-predator back into Pyramid Lake. It’s far from a secret today. The buzz started years ago when anglers started landing those 20 pound Pilot Peaks and has since been reported in all the major newspapers.
But to me, the story is as much about the opportunity to catch a trout-of-a-lifetime, as it is about correcting the past. Ultimately, it wasn’t about breeding just any trout to stock back into Pyramid Lake. It was about finding the right heir to lord over this ancient desert lake. Finding the ones who earned their stripes over ten thousand years of survival. And personally for me, it’s also about timing the next trip to Pyramid with 30 MPH winds in the forecast
