Revive - A Quarterly Fly Fishing Journal (Volume 1. Issue 3. Winter 2013) | Page 88

“Why do I love Wisconsin? I don’t know, supper clubs? The cows? Nah, it’s the Spotted Cow, and fresh cheese curds in Montfort.”

We all hear about “those” places. You know what I mean – a place that transforms you. The place you find yourself day dreaming about while sitting at your desk. The place you go to recharge your batteries and get ready to fight another round with the real world. There are so many reasons why I love the Driftless, it’s hard to put my finger on one. But I find the friends I bring fall in love and fall hard.

For years my buddies never understood my passion for fly fishing and the places it takes me. They knew I loved fishing but now I had ventured in to something new - something they didn’t understand and didn’t already excel at. But as time passes, one by one, the Driftless area is converting even the most dedicated followers of glittery bass boats, and full body hook sets.

Where else will you find a herd of cows tromping their way across the creek, or have to walk through a corn field to get to your spot, or find a riding lawn mower parked between a Ford and an Olds at Ace Hardware? This is the place brown trout destroy hoppers, hungry brookies violently gobble up Slumpbusters and massive brood stock rainbows sip scuds and pink squirrels in deep, dark pockets.
