Considerações sobre The Varieties of Reference (1982) de Gareth
Evans
Guilherme Ivo*
Psicose. Lógica.
ABSTRACT:
This text divides itself in two moments. The first one intends to raise a series of
presuppositions which Gareth Evan’s book, The Varieties of Reference, has left us catch
a glimpse while we were reading it, for we’ll not go as far as saying that they constitute
explicit theses, or explicitly announced, in the book, but real presuppositions in the
theory of communication elaborated by Evans; and with it we don’t expect to deprive
that work of its consequences, making it something feeble on account of its secrets
being revealed. We’d say that they insinuate themselves, as any secrets do, alongside
chapters and amid paragraphs, concentrating in certain sentences the meaning of a
hidden, relevant presence. What concerns us for now is to arrange certain components
worked by Evans in his concepts, which run as if yoked to a line well specific in the
history of philosophy, such as is capable of linking those presuppositions that we’ll talk
about, and composed by a subject organized in accordance with a complicated and
extensive list of suitable capacities, operating as an epistemic guarantee of a world that
so seems to be objectively exposed to the subject.
The second moment of this text consists in an attempt to draw the theme of
madness as seen by Evans who, by our estimation, answers only too insatisfactorily to
