Our theme this time is Blue Urchin Metamorphosis. All the women featured in this issue remind us somehow of the water, beginning with the mermaid we captured on the shores of Lake Michigan for our cover.

We thought of deep blues, flashes of red and fluid movement.

For years, Tricia Marcella Cimera has traveled to southern Maine to roam the seashore there. Her poems are in our literary department, The Pen. The deep blue canvases you will find in The Brush are painted by Estonian artist Kaia-Kadri Gailit. We were surprised to learn about her homeland. The Thimble features soft ocean creatures hand made by Dana Muskat, an Israeli fashion designer who sends her Big Stuffed babes overseas from her shop in France. You will find a mother and daughter team in the Trove who moved across the ocean to follow their desire to create things of beauty. They make jewelry from sea urchins, shells, and corals. Our interview this time is with Lucy Smith a versatile musician born and raised in Chicago. In her regular feature, The Nook, Barbara Barrows reviews literature inspired by the water’s edge.

Many believe that the earliest life on Earth came from the ocean. Water is the largest part of most living things. It is the stuff of creation, of creativity, of art. The artists in this issue draw their creative power from nature, from the sea.

We are glad you came, and hope you will stay awhile with us.
