Kaia-Kadri Gailit studied fine art at the Estonian Academy of Arts. She works in many mediums. Her website features sculpture, photographs, drawings, prints, and installations. But it was her paintings that captured us, small pieces in a hundred shades of blue, with shadowy reds pulsing from their depths. Thick ridges of oil and acrylic paint rose from the canvases like ocean mountain ranges. Some even cast shadows. The vibrant blues of the pieces we chose invoked deep-water twilight, and the flashes of red made us think of underwater lava flows, coral reefs and warm currents, perfect for our Blue Urchin theme.
