Then there is Sophia. In meeting her I found out she wants to be a book editor, not a writer but an editor. Who the hell knows at seventeen they want to be an editor? At sixteen I wanted to be one of Charlie’s Angels, and we know how that turned out. Sophia doesn’t devour books but instead dissects them with a pen and highlighter. Her bedroom is lined with bookshelves the length of a wall and her sisters curse her when trying to read one of her books, tripping over all the marginalia. I mean, how can one not encourage this passion. So it is with a little sadness, but much more joy, that I share this space with Sophia.
