Then there are the Hinged Beasts, a bizarre manifestation of paper dolls to cut from heavy paper stock and fasten with metal brads. Like the nesting dolls, Emma’s Hinged Beasts are festooned with strange textures: feathers and wings, lace collars and striped pajamas. With names like Sea Monkey, Bird Girl and Four-armed Kanga Man, they could have been a bit frightening. But Emma Kidd’s creatures are for dreams, not nightmares. The faces she gives them are quirky. Even the ones without mouths have smiles in their eyes.
