Shaping Up –
Coaches as Physical Role Models
Coaches, particularly at the higher levels of performance, are often judged solely on results. However, focusing
on winning alone neglects the many other roles a coach must play if they are to be successful – mentor,
substitute parent, tutor, tactician, friend and leader all spring to mind.
But what about being a physical role model? Do coaches see themselves as physical role models for their
participants and therefore act accordingly?
A new study from academics in America argues physical role modelling should be viewed as a key part of a
coach’s roles and responsibilities, as well as providing practical examples of how coaches can present themselves
as positive physical role models for their participants.
