Rebar Knowledge Center Overview of Post-Installed Reinforcing Bar Design

OVERVIEW OF POST-INSTALLED REINFORCING BAR DESIGN What you need to know to design with post-installed rebar. The methodology for designing post-installed reinforcing bars using the development and splice provisions of ACI 318 is different than the methodology for designing post-installed reinforcing bars using the anchoring-to-concrete provisions of ACI 318. Let’s break it down. Using post-installed reinforcing bars with an adhesive system is a common design and construction application. Recent revisions to the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Post-Installed Adhesive Anchors in Concrete Elements (AC308) have made it possible for an adhesive system to be approved for postinstalling reinforcing bars per the development and splice provisions of the American Concrete Institute Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318). Therefore, adhesive systems qualified per the provisions of AC308 can now be used to design post-installed reinforcing bars per the anchoringto-concrete provisions of ACI 318 and per the development and splice provisions of ACI 318. The test program outlined in Table 3.8 of AC308 includes assessment of an adhesive system when reinforcing bars are post-installed to an embedment as deep as 60d anchor . That’s deep enough to develop the bar! Adhesive systems qualified per AC308 receive recognition under the IBC in an ICC-ES evaluation service report (ESR). To learn more about the significance of the new post-installed reinforcing bar provisions of AC308, view the STRUCTURE magazine article, “Post-Installed Reinforcement Design Using Adhesive Anchor Systems” written by Hilti’s Richard Morgan. Adhesive systems that have been tested per Table 3.8 of AC308 and received recognition via an ICC-ES evaluation report are verified as being compliant with the development and splice provisions of ACI 318 to design post-installed reinforcing bars.
