What, you may ask, is “heroic” about my quietly gracious and serene neighbor? Ms. Falicia Douglas is a dedicated “soldier” who shows up each day in a cold and hostile environment where there are very few who will fight alongside her. Nothing stops her from her duties. I know that there must be days when her heart is heavy and her body is pained. I know this because she is a human being, and not one of us can escape the trials of this world. But somehow the bright light that surrounds her is never dimmed by her own concerns and struggles. Her artillery is her soft voice and those eyes that always assures others that they are in the presence of grace. Her strategy is dictated by the Word of God and she follows that direction without question. Her uniform is always the same, a humble and gentle demeanor that belies the great power that she wields. She is a warrior who is relentless and constant in her belief that “love truly does conquer all”.

I don’t know if Falicia Douglas will ever be featured on the news or be the recipient of some auspicious award for her daily battle against the darkness and the suffering in this world. I don’t even think she would want that. She aspires to a reward greater than any this world can offer her. She is a giant in my eyes looming tall despite her diminutive frame. She responds to each call to arms with the same powerful arsenal every day of her life. In a world that is increasingly full of hate and fear, she performs the most heroic act of all. She loves. Ms. Falicia Douglas is a (s)hero and I wanted her to know, that “I” know it!
