Letisha: What a blessing to be able tohelp
youth that have nowhere else to turn to.
Conversation with Kishma
Dr. George: It is a blessing to see the
dream that God place in my heart come
into fruition.
Letisha: Are applications currently being
taken?
Dr. George: The home is currently full but
we are taking applications.
Letisha: What are the eligibility
requirements? How can they apply?
Dr. George: They must reside in
Delaware. They have to be a single
woman presently in, or have aged out of
the foster care ages 18-21. They have to
be willing to work with a case manager;
mentors and direct staff. The young ladies
must be willing to achieve permanent
housing and be willing to pay a portion of
the rent, up to half of their income. They
must be drug and alcohol-free. The young
ladies have to be willing to get a job or go
to further their education. They must
attend conferences, workshops, and
seminars. They can submit an application
by going to www.kishhomeinc.org.
Letisha: The requirements are
understandable and fair. Everything that
you named will be beneficial to the young
ladies. What a blessing.
INTERVIEW
The young man became homeless on
his 18th birthday. He gathered his
belongings and got into the car. I
drove him around Kent County,
Delaware and every shelter was full
and there really wasn’t anywhere else
for me to take him. I drove around
for hours. I knew that I couldn’t take
him home with me as his therapist. I
asked him if he could think of a place
for me to take him. He said that I
could drop him off at his brother’s
job. He slept outside that night. When
I got home I was unable to sleep. The
next day I went back out and visited
the governor’s office and they were
able to help find the young man a
place to stay until I could find him a
more permanent place to stay. After
experience it was confirmed that
helping this population is what
wanted me to do.
Letisha: This is simply amazing
how God laid it on your heart not to
give up on that young man and to
help others with stories similar to
his. When is the transitional home
expected to be up and running?
I know but this not my interview so
I will let you tell it (laughs)
Dr. George: (laughs) Yes you do.
The transitional ho me was officially
opened this year. In Kent County,
Delaware K.I.S.H Home Inc. has
started providing a place for young
women aging out of foster care.
The vision is to start out in Kent
County with a few transitional
homes and then expand into other
counties. K.I.S.H Home Inc. wants to
provide access for all and will open
a home to young men aging out of
foster care as well.
t
Letisha: What is offered for young
women at the transitional home?
Dr. George: While the young ladies are in
the transitional home they will benefit
from independent living skills, mentoring,
case management, GED preparation,
college entrance assistance, housing
placement, career development,
employment and training programs,
health and wellness programs and have
personal development plans.
