From Sad Times to Happy Memories Reflections of Mamie-A Story of Survival is a sad and joyous personal account of growing up under the worst kind of adversity. It is a story of survival during times of extreme suffering and deprivation that will leave you feeling Mamie’s anguish. The character Mamie, will take you on a wild ride as she makes endless attempts to escape the horrors and abuse in her life. Some passages will make you cry while others may actually cause you to laugh hysterically, especially at the absurdities of her youthful plans for escape. The story begins in the early 1950's suburbs of Houston, Texas. Mamie is a young child of four who was unwanted, afraid, abused and with nowhere to turn, learned that she had to stand alone. Her only friends were her older brother, an abused child himself, and her nanny, who begged their mother to stop beating them. The father, though he loved his children, remained passive to the end. A victim himself, the only protection he offered was a warning to stay out of their mother's reach. This story shares Mamie's heroic battle to keep her dreams alive and hold on to her spirit. How she finds her way out of fifty-four years of abuse is yours to discover in her fascinating memoirs. In my book, you will learn where and how to find help should you find yourself in these same circumstances. Most importantly, you will learn how to stop the insane cycle that has become your life. I will even show how the simplest denial of a teddy bear as a small child returned to haunt me as an adult. If you are looking to connect with Mamie because of your own neglect or abuse, this book is for you. If looking for a release or permission to sob away those sorrows, this is the book that will allow those tears to flow. But the message is very clear…You must NEVER EVER give up! EXCERPT When we arrived home from school, mother immediately ordered dad to leave the house and take J. Watson with him. That left Colena at home but then, wasn’t that just how she liked it? I knew all too well that my mother took sick pleasure out of having a wit- ness to my beatings. Colena came rushing immediately when she heard me screaming hysterically but she was powerless to stop her. Mother ripped the clothes from my body and dragged me by the hair into the bathroom where she shoved me into the bath and turned on the cold water full force. She waited until the water ran icy cold and then held me down until it took my breath away. As I surfaced, I screamed in pain, promising to be good and never do anything again to make her angry. I begged her to stop but she was just getting started. Out came the wire coat hanger that she beat me with until my hips were spurting blood. I could literally feel the jagged edges of the hanger tearing the flesh from my body. Through it all, I could hear Colena yelling, “Miss Sara, Miss Sara, please don’t hit my baby no more!” It was utterly hopeless because Colena’s pleas fell on deaf ears. Mother’s rage knew no bounds and she seemed powerless to stop herself. When I crumpled to the floor of the tub, she turned on the hot wa- ter and made me sit in it until my skin was so red it looked and felt as though I had been severely scorched in the blazing sun. I believe I went into deep shockbut I vaguely remember Colena still begging her to stop, “Miss Sara, if you don’t stop beating my baby, I’ll call the police and tell Mr. Jack and all your friends what yuz done to my baby all these years. Yuz a mean woman and God will punish you one day.” That ended it because the only thing my mother feared was being found out for the sadistic monster she was. She had beaten me before with a wire coat hanger but never so brutally as she did this time. It was as though she intentionally measured each strike to my bare body to ensure I would suffer the maximum amount of pain and damage. My brother, Herb, had witnessed it on earlier occasions but Mother was always careful not to allow anyone else to be around. Just like Colena, Herb was helpless to stop her. To this day, he tells me it hurt him more deeply than I’ll ever know that he was unable to protect me from her madness.
