The name Gatwick can be dated back to
1241 when four acres of meadow and 18
acres of land were assigned to John de
Gatwick and his heirs. The land was part
of what was later known as the Manor
of Gatwick and stayed in the same
family until the 14th century when it then
passed to different families.
It was in 1890 that it was bought by
the Gatwick Racecourse Company
and it opened as a racecourse in 1891
complete with its own railway station.
Gatwick opened for private flying in
1930 and was sold to Redwing Aircraft
Company two years later. In 1933,
Gatwick was sold aga
