Why I love
Shorehamby-Sea
When I was asked to write this article
I did wonder where on earth to
begin! Normally the most interesting
lengthy documents I get to write in
a work context are along the lines of
Particulars of Claim, Statements and
Schedules of Loss…and I’m not sure
anyone would want to spend their
leisure time reading those!
However, the old adage that you can take
a Welshman out of Wales but you cannot
take Wales out of the Welshman is, as I
am sure any of you who have met me will
know is pretty true. If that was not enough
to show it, all three sons are Christened
with unmistakably Welsh names and my
Portslade-born wife supports Wales at the
rugby, in her best Welsh accent.
I decided that perhaps my best starting
point was to have a sneaky look at
some of the previous articles written.
Not to plagiarise, hopefully but to
gain a flavour for how others have
approached the task. Of course, as
well, all lawyers like a nice precedent
to work with and adapt!
So with all that, why Shoreham-by-Sea, a
quaint little Sussex town on the coast?
As a lifelong rugby player, it might be
thought that the dozen or so pubs in the
town would be enough on their own?
Add the three very decent curry houses
and an eminently reasonable Chinese
takeaway between the Saturday night
late arrival at the train station and home
and you might begin to think that the
deal was sealed there and then. On
one level you would not be far wrong
but there are of course much less
superficial reasons as to why, frankly,
I have no great wish to base myself or
my family elsewhere.
Unlike some of the previous writers, I
am not from these parts. Indeed I am
not even English, being a born and bred
Welsh bloke from Swansea, which is, it
has to be said, a rather different coastal
port town, perhaps a little rougher
around the edges!
