MWB Golf Day 2016
majestically through the air to land exact
where you hoped it would. For those of
you who have ever had the misfortune of
playing a round of golf with me you will
know that this rarely happens in my case.
Despite that, the gods of golf looked down
on my team mates and between us we
started to rack up some points (although
one particular team member seemed to be
racking up more than the rest of us).
The ‘halfway hut’ on the 8th was a
welcome pit stop as was the view of the
grinning marketing team flying up the
fairways in a golf buggy, bringing the
players bottles of water and chocolate
bars to see us through.
The weather was kind and the greenkeeping staff at Mid Sussex had done a
fine job of getting the course into excellent
condition for us to play. I can only assume
that one of them may have been a little
tired when he put out the ‘straightest drive’
line on the 17th fairways as this was the
least straight line you could imagine (I later
learned that the line followed the middle of
the fairway rather than being straight).
At the end of May we hosted our annual golf day. What started
out as a one off event is now in its 6th year and seems to be
becoming one of most looked forward to events in our hospitality
calendar. This year was no exception as around 60 guests
descended on the beautiful Mid Sussex Golf Club (MSGC) near
Ditchling.
Laurence, Amy and Jade from the MWB
marketing team arrived at 6.30am to set
up in readiness for our esteemed guests
arriving at 7.30 for registration. On arrival
guests were allocated a team and one
of our now collectible golf shirts before
tucking into the obligatory bacon rolls
and coffee.
I briefed the players at 8am on the format
of the day and the relaxed nature of our
event (we are not big on stuffy traditional
golf days). Players were invited to
purchase mulligans (golf’s equivalent of a
‘do over’) and all the money we raised on
60
the day would be donated to our charity
partner Rockinghorse. Unsurprisingly the
mulligans sold well but we had to limit
them to just four per person, personally I
could easily have bought 18.
We headed out to the tees for a shotgun
start and at the sound of the siren at
8.45am the ping of clubs striking balls
could be heard across the tranquil Sussex
countryside.
For those of you that play golf you will
know that there is nothing more satisfying
than cleanly hitting a little white ball
with an odd shaped stick and it flying
Nearly five hours on the course can be
quite tiring (particularly if you play like me)
and according to my Fitbit I had chalked
up over 20,000 steps by the end of the
day so the pint of Harveys that awaited me
at the clubhouse was like a re-enactment
of that famous scene in Ice Cold in Alex.
The catering team at Mid Sussex
produced a delicious Indian banquet for
lunch followed by a refreshing lemon
tart. During lunch the marketing team
were busy selling raffle tickets for some
amazing prizes that had kindly been
donated by the club and some of the
guests. Prizes included:
