If I’d known I was going to live
so long, I’d have taken better
care of myself. Leon Eldred
The modern working population is
increasingly dealing with more barriers
to maintain an acceptable level of
health. It is no surprise that research
demonstrates a strong link between
office environments and sedentary
lifestyles.
To encourage and educate our staff
in overcoming some of these barriers,
the initial objectives of our health and
wellbeing strategy was to introduce a
complimentary Healthcare Cash Plan
benefit to as a health and wellbeing
benefit for our staff. This forms part
30
of our ongoing health and wellbeing
strategy which we wanted to celebrate
by organising a week of taster classes,
educational talks and most importantly,
massages.
The aim was to encourage staff to think
about their health, recognising the
benefits of certain regular practices to
their daily wellbeing and to the reduction
of stress. The biggest challenge for
the HR team was the geographical
spread of our offices – our aim was
to offer as much as we could across
the firm even if the smaller offices did
not have the space to accommodate
providers. Although in hindsight, some
fun could have been captured of staff
attempting on-the-desk yoga poses. It
was important that we were able to give
staff what they wanted most, a way
for them to shape their own health and
wellbeing programme. No surprise there
then that massages came out tops with
mindfulness as a close contender!
In the weeks before, we worked hard
to identify the most apt, and where
possible, local providers for the
various offices. The outcome resulted
in 30 sessions taking place, with
approximately 195 attendees and 73
massages given. The HR team received
overwhelmingly motivational and
encouraging feedback, which has helped
us establish what the most popular
events were and what else you would like
to see for future events we may be able
to consider.
