“Expect the unexpected” became our motto over the next three weeks. Kalaw (another colonial town) for a three day trek into rural Myanmar. We packed only absolute essentials into our day bags (it’s amazing what you can live without when you realise you’re going to have to carry it for several hours a day in hot sunshine) and headed off into the hills with a new guide, a charming man called Ko Kyi (pronounced Gucci!). Ko Kyi’s English was brilliant (all our guides were good, but the Myanmaris do struggle with pronouncing English words. We’d been baffled at first as to what Indian snacks had to do with anything until we worked out that Sin Bo was saying ‘pagodas’ not ‘pakoras’!).
